Optimize Production Date & Shelf Life Label of Prepackaged Food

The SAMR encourages food enterprises to optimize the production date and shelf life labeling and identification of prepackaged foods.

In order to facilitate consumers to clearly identify the labeling and identification of prepackaged foods (including food additives), in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China and other laws and regulations, food enterprises are now encouraged to optimize the production date and shelf life labeling and identification of prepackaged foods. The announcement is as follows:

I. The production date and shelf life of the prepackaged food shall be prominently marked on the principal display panel of the minimum sales package of the prepackaged food; where the minimum sales package has multiple layers, the outermost package shall be marked with the production date and shelf life of the prepackaged food.

II. If the production date and shelf life are marked in the form of "see a location of the package", the location shall be clear and obvious, described accurately and easy to find.

III. Use the minimum height of not less than 3 mm, height to width ratio of not more than 3:1 characters, numbers, symbols to mark the production date and shelf life.

IV. The production date and shelf life shall be clearly marked in the form of a background color such as black characters on a white background and a clear contrast with the date color.

V. Clearly mark the production date and the expiration date of shelf life in the order of year, month and day.

VI. If there are more than one single piece of prepackaged food in the same prepackaged package, the expiration date of shelf life of the earliest single piece of prepackaged food shall be marked on the outer package, or the expiration date of shelf life of each single piece of prepackaged food shall be marked separately on the outer package.

VII. The prepackaged food produced by the sub-packaging method shall be marked with the production date and sub-packaging date of the sub-packaged prepackaged food, and the expiration date of shelf life shall be marked with the shelf life of sub-packaged prepackaged food.

VIII. Improve inkjet, printing and other date marking technology and equipment to ensure the production date, shelf life and other marking content lasting clear.
